Ireland is gearing up for a potentially captivating presidential election, as independent candidate Michael Sheridan has formally announced his intention to run. This growth adds a new dynamic to the race, notably as former UFC star Conor McGregor has also signaled his interest in seeking the nation’s highest office. Sheridan is now directly appealing to local authority councillors to secure the necessary nominations, while also emphasizing the constitutional right for candidates outside the conventional political establishment to compete.
Sheridan Calls for Respect of Constitutional Rights
Sheridan has issued a strong statement urging major political parties to respect the constitutional rights of local authority councillors to nominate presidential candidates. He specifically referenced Article 12.2.2 of Bunreacht na hÉireann, which allows candidates without traditional political backing to gain nominations.
“There have been suggestions recently that some political parties may try to block candidates seeking such local authority nominations,” Sheridan stated.”I expect the main parties to respect Article 12.2.2. of Bunreacht na hÉireann and to allow their duly elected local authority councillors to fulfil their obligation under the Constitution.”
He underscored the importance of the electorate’s role in choosing the President, stating, “Remember, it is the people of Ireland who elect their President, and not the people of Leinster House. The purpose of Article 12.2.2, as enshrined in our Constitution, is that a candidate from outside the political establishment can seek a nomination – as I am doing.”
A Platform Beyond the Political Norm
Sheridan’s campaign is positioning itself as an alternative to the established political order. He believes the constitutional provision allowing independent candidates to seek nominations is vital for a healthy democracy. This allows citizens a genuine choice beyond those put forward by mainstream parties.
The candidate is set to unveil his full platform at a press conference in Dublin this Sunday. This will be a crucial opportunity for him to outline his vision for Ireland and connect with voters.
McGregor’s potential Candidacy Adds Intrigue
The possibility of Conor McGregor entering the presidential race has already generated meaningful media attention. While he hasn’t formally announced his candidacy, his public statements have fueled speculation. Minister of State Jack Chambers recently expressed his view that McGregor is “not fit” to be President of Ireland, a sentiment that has further amplified the debate.
