Access to clean water and sanitation is a cornerstone of public health, yet remains a significant challenge for many communities worldwide. In Nyanga North, Zimbabwe, a recent initiative has demonstrated the transformative impact of improved water access on both health and well-being. The project, a collaboration between World Vision Zimbabwe, the government, and local communities, has brought piped water systems to over 100 households, dramatically altering daily life for residents like Chipo Chapatarongo, a 48-year-old mother of seven.
For Chipo and many others in Makoma and Mapara villages, obtaining water was historically a grueling task. Days began as early as with long walks to the nearest borehole, often followed by hours spent waiting in line. This arduous routine frequently resulted in children missing school to assist with water collection, impacting their education. My children often missed school because they had to help me fetch water. It was hard for them, and I could see it affecting their studies,

The lack of readily available clean water also posed serious health risks. Residents were often forced to rely on unsafe water sources, leading to frequent illnesses. Waterborne diseases, such as cholera and diarrhea, were constant threats, adding to the burden on families and the healthcare system. The interconnectedness of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) with nutritional status is increasingly recognized globally. According to Scaling Up Nutrition, inadequate WASH conditions are directly or indirectly related to undernutrition, and interventions addressing these factors are crucial for improving nutritional outcomes.
The installation of the piped water system represents a comprehensive approach to improving community health, extending beyond simply providing access to water. The initiative incorporates World Vision’s WASH program, which includes the construction of latrine toilets and handwashing stations, and promotes a clean and well-maintained environment. Chipo’s homestead serves as an example of this holistic approach, having been recognized for its cleanliness. I never realized how much a simple change could improve our health and well-being,
she stated.
The benefits extend beyond immediate health improvements. With children no longer burdened by the time-consuming task of water collection, they are able to focus on their education. The availability of clean water also frees up time for adults to pursue other opportunities. This aligns with broader efforts to address the underlying causes of undernutrition, which include unsuitable or insufficient food intake, poor care practices, and disease – all factors linked to inadequate access to WASH facilities.
The situation in Nyanga North highlights a broader pattern observed in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. A recent analysis published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health notes that climate change-induced events, such as extreme rainfall, can exacerbate waterborne disease outbreaks. For example, the cholera outbreak in Malawi following Cyclone Ana was traced to these causal chains, underscoring the vulnerability of communities with inadequate WASH infrastructure.
The Zimbabwe Livelihoods Assessment Committee (ZimLAC) report emphasizes the importance of considering WASH factors within broader rural livelihood assessments, including demographics, housing, education, health, nutrition, and social protection. This integrated approach is essential for sustainable development and resilience.
The success in Nyanga North demonstrates the potential for WASH interventions to serve as a key platform for enhancing the coverage and effectiveness of nutrition interventions. Collaboration between WASH and nutrition sectors is vital to ensure programs are designed to contribute to better nutrition outcomes. The Bonn WASH Nutrition Forum, the first of its kind, brought together experts from both fields to develop new analyses, tools, and funding commitments to strengthen the understanding of the links between WASH and nutrition.
While the Nyanga North project represents a significant step forward, continued investment in WASH infrastructure and integrated programs is crucial to address the ongoing challenges of waterborne diseases and undernutrition, particularly in vulnerable communities. The experience underscores the importance of a multisectoral dialogue and multifaceted approaches to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, recognizing that access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene is not merely a matter of convenience, but a fundamental determinant of health, education, and overall well-being.
