NVIDIA has unveiled DLSS 5, its most significant breakthrough in computer graphics since the debut of real-time ray tracing in 2018. The new technology introduces a real-time neural rendering model that infuses pixels with photoreal lighting and materials, bridging the gap between game rendering and Hollywood-level visual effects.
According to NVIDIA, DLSS 5 moves beyond traditional upscaling and frame generation to deliver generative AI-enhanced rendering that preserves artistic control while achieving unprecedented visual realism. The technology handles complex light-material interactions such as subsurface scattering on skin, fabric sheen, and hair rendering in real time.
Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, described DLSS 5 as “the GPT moment for graphics,” emphasizing its role in blending hand-crafted rendering with generative AI. He stated that twenty-five years after inventing the programmable shader, NVIDIA is reinventing computer graphics once again.
DLSS 5 will be supported by major publishers and developers including Bethesda, CAPCOM, Hotta Studio, NetEase, NCSOFT, S-GAME, Tencent, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros. Games. The technology is expected to arrive this fall and will be compatible with the GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs.
The announcement was made at NVIDIA’s GTC 2026 conference, where the company highlighted DLSS 5’s ability to deliver photorealistic visuals using current-generation hardware without requiring new architectural advances in graphics processing.
Unlike earlier versions of DLSS focused on performance gains through AI upscaling, DLSS 5 represents a shift toward neural rendering as a core graphics pipeline component, aiming to elevate visual fidelity across all tiers of game development.
