Balance is a key concept in the policy of the Dutch Association of Dermatology and Venereology (NVDV), says director Annefloor van Enst. The demand for care is growing, but dermatologists want to continue enjoying their profession. “Our policy therefore focuses on reducing workload, efficiency and lasting professional practice,” she says.
When Van Enst took office as chairman 3 years ago, the association was in a transition phase.”It was a committed and keen organization, but it was also a period of changes and temporary solutions,” she recalls. “Since then, the office has been strengthened with 2 policy advisors and the division of tasks with the board has been clarified.this allows the board to really focus on strategic course determination and long-term policy. That provides peace of mind and space to look ahead.”
She notes that this professionalization is bearing fruit. “The NVDV is developing from an executive board into a strategic and guiding body, with an office that ensures continuity and implementation. That is important, because the challenges in healthcare require an association that not only reacts, but sets the course.”
Balance
This focus on course determination is certainly relevant considering the challenges in healthcare. “Just like in other fields, the demand for care is also increasing in dermatology,” says Van Enst. “This is mainly caused by the growing number of cases of skin cancer and inflammatory diseases. Both occur more frequently at older ages and the number of elderly people is increasing. This increasing demand for care must be absorbed by the same number of dermatologists, which increases the pressure on the profession. That makes it a challenge to maintain the balance between workload and job satisfaction.”
The biennial career monitor of the Federation of Medical Specialists shows that dermatologists generally experience job satisfaction and fulfillment from their work. “young specialists are enthusiastic,” says Van Enst, “but they more often work part-time or seek a different balance between work and private life. That is healthy, but it does have consequences for capacity and continuity. We want young dermatologists to continue enjoying the profession in the long term.”
