Italy Air Traffic Control Failure Causes Flight Disruptions
Updated June 29, 2025
A technical failure at the Milan area control center caused important air traffic control problems across northern Italy, leading to widespread flight disruptions. The initial suspension of takeoffs and landings at Milan, Bergamo, Genoa, and Turin airports occurred around 10:15 p.m., followed by a second halt due to instability in the data transmission network at the Milanese Radar center of ENAV.
The air traffic control failure impacted more than 300 flights, according to reports. The Flighradar24 app showed the affected area virtually clear of air traffic during the disruption. The incident highlights the critical role of reliable data networks in maintaining smooth air traffic flow and preventing flight delays.
ENAV later released a statement saying, “ENAV announces that, thanks to the timely intervention of its technical-operational staff, the data transmission and connectivity problem found at the Milan area control center has already been resolved. Air traffic in the north-west area of Italy is gradually returning to full normality.”
Passengers faced considerable inconvenience as a result of the air traffic control breakdown. Airlines worked to provide food and water to those stranded at Pisa Airport, where many flights were diverted. Efforts were also underway to rebook passengers whose flights were canceled or delayed. Tuscany Aeroporti reported difficulties in clearing the Pisa terminal due to the scarcity of available buses during the summer season.
Aeroporti di Roma posted on its social media profiles, “We inform you that, due to a technical failure at the North-West area control center, delays or cancellations may occur for direct or airport flights of Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, Turin Caselle and Genoa.” The post advised passengers to contact their airline to check their flight status.
What’s next
While ENAV reports that air traffic is returning to normal, travelers are advised to confirm their flight status with their respective airlines and allow for potential delays as the system recovers from the earlier disruption.
