The historic Tarrytown Lighthouse in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., was targeted by vandals in an arson attack, causing damage estimated to exceed $100,000. The Hudson River landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, had just undergone a $3.4 million renovation and reopened last fall.
Westchester County police reported that a parks worker discovered smoke emanating from the five-story lighthouse Saturday morning. Responders extinguished a small fire, but the interior suffered significant damage.The first-level flooring was heavily damaged, and antiques, furniture, and 35 books dating back to the 1800s were destroyed. Multiple windows were also broken.
County Executive Ken Jenkins condemned the act. “The Tarrytown Lighthouse is one of our County’s most iconic and cherished landmarks,” Jenkins said. “This was a truly despicable act, and we will do everything we can to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.”
Police have released surveillance photos of four young men seen near the lighthouse and are asking for the public’s help in identifying them. No arrests have been made in the Tarrytown Lighthouse vandalism case.
Peter Tartaglia, first deputy commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, said the fire burned through much of the first floor. He added, “It’s disturbing what happened, but we’ll get it fixed. We’ll get it back. It was historically reconstructed and it’s a wonderful piece of history. It’s iconic in Westchester County to see that on the Hudson River.”
