NYC Launches 15,000 New Apprenticeship Opportunities Under Mayor Adams
Mayor Eric Adams announced the creation of over 15,000 apprenticeship opportunities in New York City in less than three years. The Apprenticeship Accelerator program aims to expand options into new industries and reach diverse populations with entry points for on-demand jobs.
This commitment began in Adams’ 2023 State of the City address. The goal is to create 30,000 apprenticeships by 2030, with 15,000 expected by the end of 2024, indicating the city is ahead of schedule.
Adams stated, “Our mission is to make New York City a safer, more affordable city, and through expanding job opportunities, we are doing just that.” He emphasized that these apprenticeships offer on-the-job training in high-demand careers, benefiting both job seekers and employers.
Apprenticeships in New York City have traditionally focused on construction. However, since the initiative began, non-construction apprenticeship programs have increased by 62%. New programs now include health care, technology, and public service.
Abby Jo Sigal, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Talent and Workforce Development, remarked, “Our announcement of 15,000 apprenticeships by the end of 2024 shows the city’s commitment to economic mobility.”
In October, the city launched the “Apprenticeship Community of Practice” to discuss solutions for expanding apprenticeships and identifying challenges.
The city has invested $1.8 million to diversify apprenticeship programs, bringing the total investment to over $15 million in public and private funds.
First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer stated, “This administration has fulfilled its promise to increase apprenticeship opportunities.” She highlighted that these opportunities help New Yorkers from all backgrounds find meaningful jobs that match their experiences and interests.
