New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has reignited debate over wealth taxation with a viral video advocating for a “millionaires tax” to fund public services, drawing both praise and criticism just over 100 days into his mayoralty.
The video, released by Mamdani’s office, argues that New York faces a growing affordability crisis driven by soaring housing costs and stagnant wages, and contends that targeted tax increases on the city’s wealthiest residents could generate revenue for universal childcare, rent freezes and improved public transit — key pillars of his 2025 campaign platform.
According to THE CITY, Mamdani has made progress on delivering free childcare through a state-funded pilot program, but his promise of a rent freeze for stabilized tenants remains unfulfilled, with officials indicating it may not occur before summer 2026, if at all, due to fiscal constraints.
The mayor’s push for higher taxes on millionaires has encountered resistance in Albany, where Governor Kathy Hochul has so far declined to support his proposal to raise taxes on the wealthy, despite approving state funding for the childcare initiative.
Mamdani’s approval ratings have fluctuated since taking office. A Siena University poll in late February showed 63% approval, but a more recent Marist Poll found his support had dipped to 48%, although 60% of respondents said he was fulfilling his campaign promises and 56% believed the city was moving in the right direction.
Despite these challenges, Mamdani has pursued unconventional alliances, including a second meeting with former President Donald Trump in February, during which he discussed federal funding for a major housing development at the Sunnyside Yards in Queens and advocated for the release of individuals detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The mayor’s use of social media has been noted as a defining feature of his early tenure, with his office releasing regular video updates to communicate policy goals directly to the public.
As New York grapples with a budget shortfall that threatens the scope of his affordability agenda, Mamdani continues to frame wealth taxation as both a fiscal necessity and a moral imperative, arguing that the city’s most affluent residents should contribute more to address systemic inequality.
