The fallen officer, identified as Didarul Islam, 36, was working a paid detail at the building on his day off when he was fatally shot as he entered. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described Islam as an immigrant from Bangladesh who had served with the NYPD for just over three years. He leaves behind two young sons, with his wife expecting their third child.
“He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way.He made the ultimate sacrifice,” Tisch stated at a news conference, calling Islam “a hero.”
The Unfolding Tragedy: A Trail of Gunfire
Surveillance footage captured the harrowing sequence of events.Tamura exited a double-parked BMW carrying an M4 rifle and instantly opened fire on Officer Islam. He then shot a woman attempting to take cover before “spraying” the lobby with gunfire. The shooter proceeded to the elevator bank, where he shot a security guard and another man in the lobby.
Tamura then ascended to the 33rd floor, targeting a real estate management company. He killed one person on that floor before walking down a hallway and fatally shooting himself.
Investigation Reveals Cross-Country Journey and Mental Health Concerns

An initial probe indicates his car traveled across the country, passing through Colorado on july 26, Nebraska and Iowa on July 27, and arriving in Columbia, New Jersey, shortly before entering New york city. While Tamura had a ”documented mental health history,” the motive behind the horrific attack remains unknown. Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that officials are still working to understand the full scope of what transpired.
