NYK Group Donates to Sakushima Island Environmental Conservation | Marine Biodiversity Support

NYK Line and its group company, Asahi Unyu Kaisha, Ltd., are continuing their support for environmental conservation efforts in Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, with a combined donation of 1.5 million yen. NYK will contribute 1 million yen, while Asahi Unyu Kaisha will donate 500,000 yen, earmarked for activities on Sakushima, a remote island in Mikawa Bay.

The donation, formally presented on February 5, 2026, marks the fourth consecutive year the NYK Group has provided financial assistance to Nishio City, beginning in 2023. This ongoing commitment underscores a growing focus on marine environmental protection, particularly in areas with high vessel traffic.

Mikawa Bay, strategically positioned between the Chita and Atsumi peninsulas, serves as a crucial waterway for numerous ships. Recognizing its responsibility within this vital maritime corridor, NYK has actively engaged its employees in volunteer initiatives since 2023. These efforts center around the planting of eelgrass seedlings, a key component in restoring the local marine ecosystem.

The funds will be primarily allocated to research and restoration projects focused on both seaweed bed cultivation and eelgrass seedling propagation. Seaweed beds, often referred to as the “cradle of the sea,” play a critical role in maintaining water quality and providing essential habitats for marine life. Eelgrass, found in temperate and subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere, further contributes to seawater purification, oxygen supply, and biodiversity.

Nishio Mayor Ken Nakamura expressed his gratitude for the continued support, stating, “Interest in marine environmental conservation has been growing in recent years, and the seaweed bed restoration activities on Sakushima — an island that attracts significant attention from both residents of the prefecture and the city — are truly commendable initiatives that contribute to the preservation of marine resources. We will make effective use of this donation to support future activities and sincerely appreciate your continued support, and cooperation.”

In February 2025, NYK and Asahi Unyu Kaisha donated 2 million yen to Nishio City for the same purpose, and in February 2024, a donation of 1.5 million yen was made. The 2025 donation was particularly notable as it coincided with the acquisition of blue carbon credit certification for the Sakushima seaweed bed restoration activities.
