NYPD Officers Suspended After Bronx Crash: Stolen SUV Chase Ends in Death
two NYPD officers from the 50th Precinct in the Bronx have been suspended with pay amid an investigation into their actions following a fatal car crash on april 2.The incident involved a stolen Honda SUV driven by 31-year-old Francisco Guzman.
According to law enforcement sources, the chase ended when Guzman lost control of the SUV while exiting the Henry Hudson Parkway at Dyckman Street around 5 a.m. The vehicle crashed and burst into flames. surveillance video shows the officers arriving at the scene shortly after.
Rather of assisting, the video appears to show the officers stopping briefly before driving away in the opposite direction of the burning vehicle. Sources say the officers allegedly turned off their emergency lights and returned to the precinct, completing their shifts without reporting the crash.
Guzman died in the crash. The family’s attorney, Jeremy Feigenbaum, expressed outrage, stating the officers acted as “judge, jury and executioner.” guzman’s stepmother, Carmen Colon, said the video was “hurtful” and believes the officers could have helped. His sister,Shakira Guzman,called the officers’ actions “callous.”
“It’s hurtful. Very hurtful to see that,” said Carmen Colon, guzman’s stepmother. “They could’ve helped get him out, get him assistance.”
