Johnston’s Connection to the National Youth Theatre
Prior to the charges becoming public, Johnston was prominently involved with the National Youth Theatre. His personal website described him as a “star performer,” having taken lead roles in numerous productions, including “Oliver!”, for which he also served as a program director. Social media posts from the NYT itself indicate Johnston was working as a tutor as recently as July 2021, and was referred to as a “current assistant director” in a 2020 post.
Though, the NYT has been speedy to distance itself from the allegations concerning Johnston’s personal conduct. In a statement, the theatre emphasized that ”these charges do not relate to his time employed by our organisation” and confirmed that Johnston is no longer involved with the NYT.

The Importance of Safeguarding in Youth Arts Organizations
This case underscores the critical importance of robust safeguarding practices within youth arts organizations. The performing arts, by their nature, often involve close interaction between adults and young people, creating a potential vulnerability that necessitates stringent oversight and preventative measures. Organizations like the NYT have a duty to not only provide a creative outlet but also to ensure a secure and respectful environment for all involved.
Looking ahead, increased scrutiny and demand for transparency regarding safeguarding policies within these organizations are likely. The development and implementation of thorough training programs for staff and volunteers, coupled with clear reporting mechanisms for concerns, will be essential. Furthermore, a proactive approach to risk assessment and ongoing review of safeguarding protocols will be vital to maintaining trust and protecting young participants. This incident serves as a stark reminder that safeguarding is not merely a procedural requirement, but a fundamental ethical obligation.
