NZ Post Delivery Suspension: Businesses Issue Refunds
Small Businesses Stranded: US Tariffs Trigger Shipping Crisis for Kiwi Entrepreneurs
Wellington, New Zealand – A wave of anxiety is sweeping through New Zealand’s small business community as unexpected US tariffs have triggered a shipping suspension, leaving entrepreneurs scrambling to adapt and fearing for their livelihoods. NZ Post abruptly halted several shipping options to the United States last Thursday after the US imposed tariffs of 15 percent, throwing carefully laid business plans into disarray.
The impact is already being felt acutely. Pepper Racoon, a Wellington-based artist who runs a small business, has been forced to refund approximately $500 to US customers. With 20 percent of her sales originating from the US market, Racoon is deeply concerned about the future.
“I’ve been in business for eight years, and I’ve taken a lot of knocks with Covid, and then the cost-of-living crisis,” Racoon told Morning Report. “Breaking into the US market and having consistent access to at least 20 percent of my income coming from there has been really helpful. I’m not really sure where to go from hear, honestly, and I think a lot of other small businesses will be feeling the same way.”
the initial understanding was that US Customs would directly collect tariffs from customers. However, the reality is far more complex. Businesses overseas are now responsible for collecting and submitting these tariffs, a process that requires navigating a certified brokerage and incurring substantial fees.
“One of the companies I looked at that’s certified to collect these tariffs to integrate with Shopify, wich is what I use, is $4000 a year,” Racoon explained. “I simply can’t afford that on top of all of my other operating expenses.”
Racoon is not alone in her distress. Daan Kolthoff, owner of South Pacific Berets, a niche business with a staggering 90 percent of its customers residing in the US, spent the weekend grappling with the fallout.”It’s very painful,” Kolthoff told RNZ.”I have to contact them and refund their money, because I have no idea how long this will take or what sort of increase in cost there will be. I have to cancel a number of orders and make an declaration on the website that US customers for the time being can’t place orders with me. It’s quite bad for my business.”
The suspended NZ Post services include economy, economy tracked, economy plus, courier, and express options, impacting a wide range of businesses relying on affordable and efficient shipping. Letters sent via economy are also affected.
NZ Post declined an interview with Morning Report on monday, but in a statement to RNZ, the association stated it was responding “with agility” to make the necessary changes to resume shipping.
“Guidance from US Customs & Border Protection was only recently issued and requires a number of changes for both businesses and NZ Post, including updates to shipment data, duty and tax payments, and how goods are processed for entry into the US,” a spokesperson said.
The statement further revealed that major airline partners have decided to stop carrying mail items subject to the tariff due to the new regulations.
While NZ Post has indicated the suspension is temporary, the lack of clarity and the potential for significant cost increases are causing considerable uncertainty and anxiety within the small business community. The future of these businesses, many of whom have already weathered significant challenges in recent years, hangs in the balance as they navigate this unexpected trade hurdle.
