Oakland A’s Stadium Plan Faces Final Hurdles Amidst Relocation Talks
The Oakland A’s face critical decisions regarding their future in the city. For more than a decade, the team’s efforts to secure a new stadium have been hampered by various obstacles. The Howard terminal project on the Oakland waterfront represents what might be the last chance to remain in Oakland, their home for over 50 years.
The Oakland Coliseum, their current stadium, has suffered from years of neglect. While the stadium offered views of the Oakland hills from its opening in 1966 until 1995, a 1995 addition of a 20,000-seat section, Mount Davis, significantly altered the ballpark experience.
Oakland has seen a decline in its professional sports presence. The Warriors relocated to San Francisco, and the Raiders now play in Las Vegas, leaving the A’s as the city’s sole major league team.
The A’s have explored relocation options, including a potential move to San Jose from 2012-14, which was blocked by the San Francisco Giants. Las Vegas has emerged as another possibility alongside the Howard Terminal project. MLB eased a potential move to Las Vegas on June 29, 2022, announcing the A’s would not have to pay a relocation fee. However, the team has not publicly identified a specific site in Las Vegas.
The $12 billion Howard Terminal proposal aims to transform the Oakland waterfront. The project includes a privately financed $1 billion, 35,000-seat ballpark, along with retail and commercial space, hotel rooms, and improved public access to the waterfront. The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Progress Commission (SFBCDC) approved the project on June 30 with a 23-2 vote.
Despite this progress, the Howard Terminal project faces further hurdles, including a final city council vote expected in the fall. Councilmembers Noel Gallo and Carroll Fife have voiced opposition. Gallo called for a public vote in November to decide on public funding for the project. the A’s sought $855 million in taxpayer money last year for infrastructure improvements.
Even with a new stadium, it is indeed uncertain whether the A’s can attract fans, given their poor performance and owner John Fisher’s reluctance to invest in the team. The team’s current record is 25-52, the worst in MLB.
What’s next
The Oakland City Council will vote on the howard Terminal project in the fall. The decision will determine whether the A’s remain in Oakland or pursue relocation to Las Vegas.
