the story of Guns N’ Roses’ 1992 Slane Castle concert is legendary, filled with near-disaster and a last-minute,helicopter-fueled rescue. But the tale doesn’t end with the drama; it’s a story of redemption, a heartfelt connection with a devoted fan, and a reminder of the power of live music.
The Night axl Rose Almost Didn’t Make It
In the summer of 1992, Slane Castle in Ireland was buzzing with anticipation for Guns N’ Roses. However, the band’s frontman, Axl Rose, was nowhere to be found just hours before the scheduled performance. As one individual intimately involved with the event recalled, Axl was still in his Dublin hotel room, sparking a full-blown panic.”There was a panic then and we basically said, ‘if you are not on stage in the next half-an-hour/40 minutes there’s probably going to be a riot and that’s going to rest on your head.So whatever you have to do, please just make it happen,'” they explained. The stakes were incredibly high. A crowd of over 80,000 fans had gathered, and the potential for unrest was very real.
The solution? A dramatic, unforgettable entrance. Axl Rose arrived by helicopter, landing just in time to launch into “Night Train” and ignite the stage. It was a moment of pure rock and roll spectacle, born from a chaotic situation.
A Full Circle Moment in 2017
Fast forward to 2017, when Guns N’ Roses returned to Slane Castle as part of their “Not in This Lifetime…” tour. The concert was a resounding success, and provided an opportunity for Axl to address the infamous 1992 incident.During a meeting with those involved in the original concert, Axl was remarkably gracious.”In fairness, when they came back and played in 2017 I met Axl and we kind of laughed about that. And he was very courteous and apologetic…and he put on an amazing show.” It was a moment of closure, a testament to the band’s growth and Axl’s willingness to acknowledge the past.
However, the 2017 concert held a deeper, more personal significance. A dedicated fan, known as Lord Henry, was seriously ill in hospital and unable to attend. Axl Rose, aware of the situation, took a moment during the performance to send a heartfelt shout-out.
A Touching Tribute and a Bittersweet Joke
“There was a lovely moment during the gig where Axl said, ‘big shout out to Lord Henry who is in hospital and not very well at the moment,'” recounted a witness. The crowd responded with a resounding roar of support, demonstrating the power of the Guns N’ Roses community.
But axl wasn’t finished. In a move that perfectly encapsulated his complex personality, he added with a wry smile, “but I’m not going to dedicate that last song to him,” referring to the iconic ballad “Knocking On Heaven’s Door.” It was a bittersweet joke, a moment of levity amidst a touching tribute.
The family of Lord Henry deeply appreciated the gesture, even with the playful jab.Sadly, 2017 was a challenging year for the family, as the father had come very close to losing his life. The concert, and Axl’s acknowledgement, became a cherished memory during a challenging time.
