The region’s diverse vegetation and climate, ranging from Mediterranean to high mountain conditions in the Pyrenees, presented challenges for the existing five RNSA sensors, which Tilak said did not adequately cover the region’s various vegetation and climatic zones.
Combining Cartography, Climate Data, and Citizen Science
The new forecast combines detailed mapping of allergenic plants in Occitania, identified by allergists, with climatic data and European models. According to Atmo, botanists have inventoried 146 allergenic species in the region.
Occitania Atmo has also partnered with pl@ntNet, a plant identification application, to create a flower observatory. Citizens are encouraged to submit photos of flowers, particularly allergenic plants, to provide real-time data and validate the forecast models.

Early Results and Future Expansion
Tilak noted that the initial year of the project will focus on refining algorithms. Currently, the agency monitors eight taxa, including grasses, alder, birch, sagebrush, ambrosia, hazelnuts, cypresses, and olive trees. The goal is to expand to 18 taxa next year, incorporating species such as rocking, field mustard, chénopods, burnt sodes, plantain, salicaceous, platanaceae, bettaries, and Pistachio Lentisques.
