Ocean County’s ‘Slide City’ Playground Opens to Thrill-Seekers

– Ocean County officials celebrated the opening of a revamped playground, dubbed “Slide City,” at Ocean County Park in Lakewood, New Jersey. The new facility, located at

, features a dual zip line, expanded slides, and an outdoor fitness area, offering recreation for visitors of all ages, and abilities.

The $1.59 million project more than doubles the number of slides available at the previous playground and boasts a nearly 1,000-foot dual zip line. Ocean County Commissioner Robert S. Arace emphasized the importance of the park to the community, stating, “Ocean County Park is one of our most loved and historic parks, and a place that families have been coming to for generations. The enhancements we’re celebrating today build on that legacy, ensuring that this park continues to meet the needs of the families who use it every day.”

The playground incorporates features designed for inclusivity, including rubber surfacing, ADA-accessible walkways, and ground-level play features. A large outdoor gym area provides exercise opportunities for all ages. The design aims to create a welcoming environment for children and adults with diverse abilities.

Funding for “Slide City” was secured through the American Rescue Plan Act, which was signed into law in to support recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Kompan Inc. Designed the playground, and Buzz Burger Construction handled the installation.

The “Slide City” upgrade is part of a broader initiative by the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation to modernize parks throughout the county. Recent playground installations have also been completed at Patriots County Park in Jackson Township, Freedom Field County Park in Little Egg Harbor, Beaver Dam Creek County Park in Point Pleasant, Tip Seaman County Park in Tuckerton, Lake Shenandoah County Park in Lakewood, Mill Creek County Park in Berkeley Township, and Eno’s Pond County Park in Lacey Township. Further upgrades are underway at Cattus Island County Park in Toms River, and a new playground is planned for Matthews McKinley Park in Lakewood.

The Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation maintains a 4,000-acre park system, and the ongoing improvements reflect a commitment to providing accessible and engaging recreational spaces for residents and visitors alike. The new playground is now open to the public.
