With approximately three quarters of the world covered in water, oceans provide varied opportunities for marine photographers, according to CNN reporting. Organizers received thousands of extraordinary images for the annual competition, which features categories spanning wildlife, fine art, and conservation.

New Categories and Standout Finalist Images for 2026

Entries display diverse subjects through drone, coastal, and underwater perspectives, capturing moments ranging from fish protecting their young to documentation of human impact, according to CNN. A newly introduced category for the 2026 competition, titled Ocean Unseen: Hidden Worlds, turns the lens to the ocean’s smallest and least-seen inhabitants.

Among the standout images highlighted by organizers are a photograph showing two orcas working together to carry a humpback whale calf they hunted, and another depicting an enormous oceanic sunfish, according to CNN.
