October 2024 US Gaming Spending Surges 10% Driven by Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
US consumer spending on video games rose 10% year-on-year in October, reaching $4.7 billion. This growth was driven by the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
Content sales totaled $4.23 billion, a 12% increase from the previous year. Hardware sales declined by 23% to $249 million. Circana reported a 16% rise in spending on non-mobile subscriptions, largely due to Black Ops 6 launching on Game Pass, which set records for subscriptions.
Console content led the increase in overall content spending, rising 27% compared to last year. Mat Piscatella from Circana stated that PlayStation platforms accounted for 82% of Black Ops 6 full game dollar sales during the tracking period. The game’s sales in the first two weeks were 23% higher than those of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023) in the same timeframe.
Eight out of the top ten best-selling games in October were new releases. Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero debuted at No. 2, and Silent Hill 2 (2024) took the No. 3 spot. Other notable entries included Metaphor: ReFantazio at No. 5 and Sonic X Shadows Generations at No. 9.
