A Meal Interrupted by a Medical Emergency
O’Donnell described the moment the emergency began: “We were at a restaurant, and this woman started choking. She was turning red, and her hands were going up to her throat. It was a clear sign of choking.” The situation quickly escalated, prompting O’Donnell and her companions to spring into action.
“I remember yelling, ‘We need to help her!’ and my cousin Mary and my friend Kiki instantly jumped up with me,” O’Donnell recounted. The immediate reaction was to get the woman to her feet and assess the situation.
The Heimlich Maneuver: A Team Effort
With the woman standing, O’Donnell took charge, guiding her friend Kiki through the Heimlich maneuver. “I put Kiki behind her, and I put her fist in the right place,” O’Donnell explained. “She starts to give her the Heimlich, which she hadn’t done before.”
O’Donnell stayed close, offering reassurance and checking on the woman’s breathing. “I’m holding her hands and talking to her, saying, ‘It’s okay, it’s okay. Can you breathe?’ I put my hand near her, and she could not breathe at all.” The urgency of the situation was palpable, with the woman visibly struggling.
“She started getting caught red in the face,” O’Donnell recalled. “My heart is going and I’m one of those people who is great in a crisis, but after the crisis I’m a mess.” This sentiment captures the adrenaline-fueled focus required during such an event, followed by the emotional toll it takes.
the woman’s daughters, initially distressed by the unfolding drama, were relieved as O’donnell coached Kiki. “my cousin Mary put a napkin in front of her and told her to get it out,” she added. “I pushed Kiki’s hand, and she got it,and something came out,a big wad of stuff.”

I was thinking, ‘Am I going to have to do a tracheotomy?’ As I took a course and they told you what to do if it wasn’t working and you were in a dire situation – and we were in a dire situation.”
This reflection underscores the intense pressure and the mental preparedness that can kick in during emergencies. “In panic mode,I go into thinking I’m Superman or something, and I’m not. I’m not an EMT. But when I see something like that, I spring into action.”
The woman, identified as Angela, eventually returned to her meal, a testament to her resilience and the effectiveness of the intervention. O’Donnell shared her awe at the turn of events: “We were all kind of in tears, and I was doing my best to stay composed.”
