Cercle, the French production company known for its captivating videos blending electronic music with stunning visuals from locations like Abu Simbel in Egypt and the Salar de Uyuni in bolivia, has launched its international live concert tour, Odyssey.
Derek Barbolla, Cercle’s founder and creative director, described the tour as an “internal trip” for fans, featuring artists such as Moby, Empire of the Sun, Artbat, and Max Richter. The tour commenced in Mexico City, with upcoming shows in Los Angeles and Paris. A full show video of the Danish trio WhoMadeWho‘s performance in Mexico City premiered on YouTube Saturday, offering a preview of the tour’s experience.
“We wanted to start in Mexico as the public’s energy is always very intense, and we wanted to set the tone for the entire tour,” Barbolla said in a video call interview from Mexico.
The Mexico city lineup included Ben Böhmer, Jungle (DJ Set), Monolink, The Blaze, hania Rani, Mura Mura, Spanish singer Judeline, and Venezuelan group Rawayana, along with WhoMadeWho.
“The concept works very well with live music, and that’s why we invite bands like Rawayana that at the first moment may seem a bit surprising, but we also wanted to surprise the audience, not always be where they await us,” Barbolla said. “Of course, we also wanted to work with the closest artists, such as whomadewho, Ben Böhmer, Monolink who are already our friends.”
The Los Angeles and Paris lineups will differ, while maintaining the same core concept.
The Return Home
Attendees at multiple concerts will notice a recurring visual theme, though the specific images will vary. Each concert is tailored to the performing artist’s music.Barbolla and film director Neels Castillon collaborated to create a narrative centered on the theme of returning home, overcoming obstacles and challenges. The film follows four characters inspired by Homer’s Ulysses, so the tour’s title, Odyssey.
“There are some visuals that I like so much, that I used them in all shows, but they do not always have the same impact or the same emotion, it depends on the music,” said Barbolla, who studied cinema in Paris and DJs as a hobby. He believes his DJing experience has helped him refine the tour’s concept. “I want it to be like a surprise and that people, the public, can live a really unique experience.”
Notably, recording with cell phones is prohibited at the shows.
“For me it was very significant, I think it is a key concept of the project, it was very difficult to keep this idea until the end,” Barbolla said. “It is a way of being totally connected to us … to lose the notion of time, to enter the universe. And I think it did work because people spoke, danced, cried and in the end it whent out to the real world, but with your memory.”
Special Screens
The Mexico City concerts were held at Expo Santa Fe, featuring an immersive stage with 33-foot-high screens surrounding the audience. the setup included 2,300 square meters of 8K screens on the walls and ceilings, along with surround sound speakers.
Barbolla emphasized the tour’s commitment to sustainability, using 164-foot-long screens with retroprojectors rather of LED screens, and renting equipment locally, including lights and sound.
“It looks incredible and I hope that the public likes it as much as us,” Barbolla said. “The retroproyed screen makes a slightly cinematographic effect that we liked a lot … we only travel with the screens, they are a giant fabric that fits in a container that is quite small that we fold it and travel in the whole world with that. That economically and ecologically makes the concept nomadic and can travel throughout the world.”
The screen surface area will be the same in Los Angeles and Paris.Organizers anticipate similar attendance numbers to Mexico city, with 5,000 attendees per show.
Upcoming Concerts in Latin America
Barbolla, who is French with Argentine heritage, said that Cercle, which recently celebrated its ninth anniversary, plans to film again in Latin America.
“We have many places to explore in Latin America that are incredible and in Mexico,as we have finished this tour we will start working again in the shows, but also at the festivals,” he said.”There is a lot of work that awaits us yet.”
Barbolla confirmed his intention to return to Mexico.
“I am married to a Mexican, I married in Mexico, love that I have for this country is very critically importent,” he said.
