Odysseus Film Aims for grounded Take on Greek mythology
Director James Mangold is approaching his upcoming film adaptation of Homer’s odyssey with a focus on realism, drawing inspiration from past epics like Troy (2004) rather than fantastical adventures like Clash of the Titans (2010). Mangold shared his vision in an interview with Empire, explaining his intention to portray mythological elements as understandable phenomena within the ancient world.
“One of the things I needed to crack was how to approach mythological elements in a sort of real-world way,” Mangold told Empire. ”The big breakthrough creatively in thinking about the gods was that everything that is now explained by science was once supernatural.”
“Lightning, thunder, earthquakes, volcanoes… people are literally seeing gods everywhere; not even the evidence of gods, they’re seeing the actions of gods. I don’t want to say too much about it beyond indicating that yes,the evidence of the supernatural is all around these people. It’s very much part of their lives. And I think it’s quite a lot of fun to tap into that.”
This approach raises questions about how characters like Circe and Calypso, monsters like the Sirens and Scylla, and key deities such as Poseidon, Athena, Zeus, Helios, and Hermes will be depicted. The film will follow Odysseus and his crew’s decade-long journey home after the Trojan War, as recounted in Homer’s epic poem.
Production Details and Technology
The film is notable for being shot entirely using brand-new IMAX film technology, promising a visually immersive experience. The release date is currently set for July 17, 2026. This represents a meaningful investment in analog filmmaking at a time when digital cinematography dominates the industry. IMAX film offers a higher resolution and dynamic range than digital alternatives, perhaps enhancing the film’s epic scope and visual impact.
The Shift towards Realistic Mythology
mangold’s stated intention to ground the fantastical elements of Greek mythology in a “real-world way” represents a departure from many previous adaptations. Films like Clash of the Titans frequently enough emphasized spectacle and overt displays of divine power.Troy, though, attempted to portray the Trojan War as a historically plausible conflict, minimizing direct divine intervention. Mangold’s approach appears to be closer to the latter, suggesting a focus on the human experience within a world where the supernatural is perceived as natural.
This approach aligns with modern understandings of how ancient cultures interpreted natural phenomena. Before the advent of scientific clarification, events like storms, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes were ofen attributed to the actions of gods. Mangold’s vision suggests the film will explore this perspective, showing how the characters in the Odyssey would have perceived the world around them.
