Ohio State Buckeyes Face Recruiting Setback Amid 2024 Success
The Ohio State Buckeyes are having a strong 2024 season, but their future faced challenges recently. Head coach Ryan Day and his 2025 recruiting class lost the top spot after two key decommitments. Zahir Mathis and London Merritt, both highly rated recruits, decided to leave the program. Additionally, there are rumors that five-star cornerback commit Na’eem Offord may flip his commitment to Auburn.
Offord is one of three five-star recruits in the Buckeyes’ 2025 class. Losing him could weaken the team’s secondary in the coming years. The critical question is how Ohio State will respond to the potential loss of Offord.
Fortunately, the Buckeyes still hold the commitment of Devin Sanchez, the top cornerback in the 2025 class. Sanchez, a five-star recruit from Texas, committed to Ohio State earlier this year. Another bright spot is three-star cornerback Jordyn Hill, who recently flipped from Cincinnati to Ohio State.
The Buckeyes need more options to reinforce their roster. Three-star Jett White has received an offer from the team and is still considering his decision. Beyond that, Ohio State risks running out of choices until they can find more recruits or flip commitments from other players in the 2025 class.
Looking ahead, the program needs to focus on cornerbacks in the 2026 recruiting class. Some top prospects have already received offers. Notable names include:
- Victor Singleton (Toledo, OH): Four-star, No. 3 cornerback
- Dorian Barney (Carrollton, GA): Four-star, No. 7 cornerback
- Zech Fort (Bradenton, FL): Four-star, No. 8 cornerback
- Elbert Hill (Akron, OH): Four-star, No. 11 cornerback
- Samari Matthews (Cornelius, NC): Four-star, No. 13 cornerback
- Jakob Weatherspoon (Avon, OH): Four-star, No. 14 cornerback
- Nassir McCoy (Buford, GA): Four-star, No. 19 cornerback
Ohio State is in a good position with in-state prospects, especially Singleton, Hill, and Weatherspoon, who rank in the top 15 for cornerbacks in the 2026 class. The 2025 cycle continues, offering the Buckeyes a chance to capitalize on these opportunities.
Despite a promising 2026 class, the Buckeyes may face depth issues during the 2025 season. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles might need to lean on underclassmen and Jermaine Mathews Jr. depending on next year’s roster.
To improve their depth, Ohio State might explore the transfer portal. This strategy has worked before. For example, junior Davison Igbinosun transferred from Ole Miss in 2023, and the team recently added sophomore Caleb Downs through the portal.
By enhancing their roster via the transfer portal and focusing on the 2026 recruiting class, Ohio State can effectively address the expected loss of Offord and ensure a strong future.
