Ohtani, Judge Trade Homers as Dodgers Beat Yankees in MVP Showdown
Updated May 31, 2025
Los Angeles — Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge, two of baseball’s biggest stars, put on a show Friday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to defeat the New York Yankees 8-5. The game, a rematch of last fall’s World Series, saw both reigning MVPs homer in the first inning, marking a historic start to the highly anticipated matchup.
Ohtani’s performance, including a second home run in the sixth inning, propelled the Dodgers to victory. His 15 home runs in May tied a franchise record. The MVP showdown lived up to its billing, with both players making notable contributions.
Judge, who finished the game with a home run and a double, showcased his defensive skills with a diving catch in right-center field. However,it was ohtani who ultimately led his team to the come-from-behind win, highlighting his status as a two-way phenomenon.
“He’s impressive,” Judge said. “He’s one of the best players in the game for a reason. What he can do in the box,on the basepath, once he gets back on the mound — it’s special.”
The Dodgers’ comeback was reminiscent of their World Series rally, as they scored multiple runs off Yankees pitcher Max Fried, who had previously dominated. Freddie Freeman contributed with an RBI double, while Andy Pages added a run-scoring single. The Dodgers’ offense proved too much for the Yankees to handle.
Freeman said he “actually never thought about” the World series comeback when the Dodgers rallied. He added, “That was just pretty good ball game right there to beat Max Fried, who is probably one of the top five pitchers in the game right now. To score that many runs off him, it’s very hard to do. And a testament to Shohei, who is hitting home runs all over the place, and then just getting guys on, keeping the line moving, getting huge hits, and just tacking on a couple more runs. That was awesome.”
What’s next
Ohtani is expected to continue his pitching progression with a live batting practice session. While his return to the Dodgers’ rotation is not expected until after the All-Star break, he continues to be a dominant force at the plate.
