Ohtani’s Role: Two homers Power Dodgers Past Giants
LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani’s powerful role at the plate, highlighted by two home runs, and Clayton Kershaw’s dominant pitching performance fueled the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 11-5 victory Saturday over the San francisco Giants. The Dodgers evened their series against their longtime rivals.
Teoscar Hernandez contributed a home run, and Mookie Betts added a two-run double for Los Angeles. Kershaw (2-0) allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out five in seven scoreless innings. He is now 12 strikeouts shy of 3,000, aiming to become the 20th pitcher and fourth left-hander to reach that milestone.
Giants right-hander Landen Roupp (4-5) struggled, allowing six runs on four hits and walking a career-high five batters in just 1 2/3 innings. It was the shortest start of his career.
Ohtani ignited the Dodgers’ offense with a home run on Roupp’s fourth pitch. It marked his first home run since June 2 and his first at home since May 30 against the New York Yankees. The Dodgers then scored five runs in the second inning, chasing Roupp from the game. Andy Pages had an RBI single, Michael Conforto followed with a run-scoring double, Betts hit a two-run double, and Will Smith added a sacrifice fly.
Hyeseong Kim added an RBI single in the third inning. Ohtani’s second home run came in the sixth off Tristan Beck, extending the lead to 8-0.Hernandez then hit a two-run homer. Miguel Rojas added a home run in the eighth against Giants catcher Logan Porter, who was pitching.
Casey Schmitt hit a grand slam in the ninth against Dodgers position player Enrique Hernandez, who pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up five runs (four earned). Anthony Banda recorded the final out for los Angeles. Despite the loss, it was only San Francisco’s second defeat in their last 10 games.
