Ohtani continues Hot Streak With Another Lead-Off Home Run

CLEVELAND — Shohei Ohtani’s stellar May continued monday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Cleveland Guardians 7-2. The reigning National League MVP launched a leadoff home run, his 19th of the season, off a fastball from Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams.
Ohtani’s power surge this month is notable, as he typically finds his stride later in the season. This marks the second time in his career that he has hit leadoff homers in consecutive games. His performance places him among Dodgers legends such as Cody Bellinger, Roy Campanella, and Gil Hodges, all of whom had at least 19 home runs within the team’s first 54 games.
This was Ohtani’s fifth leadoff homer this season and 17th since joining the majors in 2018. It was also the second time this year he homered on the first pitch of an at-bat. Williams, meanwhile, has now allowed three first-pitch home runs this season, tying him with several other pitchers for the league lead.
“Shohei is always going to be aggressive early,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “I think it was more control over command. It was a high-velocity fastball. He was set up away and yanked it down and into his nitro zone.”
