LOS ANGELES – Benches cleared in the latest installment of the Dodgers-Padres rivalry Thursday night after Fernando Tatis Jr.was hit by a pitch, escalating tensions that saw both managers ejected. The Padres ultimately prevailed 5-3, but the game was overshadowed by the animosity between the two clubs.
The incident occurred after Dodgers rookie Jack Little drilled Tatis in the hand with a 93 mph fastball. This marked the fifth time the Dodgers have hit Tatis since the start of last season. Padres manager Mike Shildt confronted Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, leading to a shoving match and the emptying of both dugouts and bullpens.
Earlier in the game, Padres pitcher Robert Suarez hit Shohei Ohtani with a 100 mph fastball. By night’s end, Shildt, Roberts, Padres bench coach Brian Esposito, and Suarez had all been ejected.
After the game, Manny Machado expressed concern for Tatis, saying the Dodgers should ”pray” his teammate’s injury isn’t serious. Tatis himself said initial X-rays where inconclusive, and he would undergo a CT scan Friday.
