Ōhura’s local state of emergency was lifted on Sunday, April 20, 2026, one week after floodwaters swept through the remote King Country settlement, but residents continue to face a lengthy recovery process as many remain displaced and significant damage persists.
According to Ruapehu civil defence controller Clive Manley, about 50 homes were damaged by the flooding, with six declared uninhabitable. He stated that some residents have “lost everything,” with floodwaters destroying furniture, whiteware, and personal belongings, forcing them into alternate accommodation.
Recovery efforts are now focused on helping residents return to safe homes. The council has installed de-humidifiers to dry out sodden carpets and floors and is pumping out septic tanks. Extensive roading repairs are also underway to fix slips throughout the network.
During the past week, residents have been scraping sludge and silt from their homes, and some have searched for animals that disappeared in the floodwaters. Manley noted that some farms have lost access due to slips and damaged fences, with stock losses also reported.
A mayoral relief fund was established with $50,000 from council funds, and the government has been asked to contribute. Manley emphasized that while the civil defence response has shifted into recovery mode, the work ahead remains substantial for the affected community.
The flooding cut off the remote settlement, forcing some locals to escape in chest-high waters during the early hours of last Sunday morning. Surface flooding was observed outside the Ōhura Cosmopolitan Club, and the district continues to assess the full cost of the damage and recovery required.
