awaiting Contract Talks: Bowman’s viewpoint
Speaking with Bob Stauffer on CHED 880 Edmonton,Holland expressed his optimism regarding McDavid’s future with the Oilers. “McDavid is a huge part of everything we do here, and so I don’t have a timeline update, but I do expect to have some conversations with them soon and hopefully get that wrapped up,” Holland stated.
McDavid became eligible for an extension on July 1st and is entering the final year of his current eight-year, $100 million contract. Despite the looming possibility of unrestricted free agency after the upcoming season, Holland has adopted a patient approach, allowing McDavid to lead the timeline for any extension talks.
Respecting the Athlete’s Timeline
Holland emphasized the importance of respecting McDavid’s process.”I’ve had really good conversations with Judd Moldaver (McDavid’s agent) since the season ended, and I’ve tried to give Connor his space, and I think that it’s important,” Holland said. “You know, a lot of this is respecting the athlete and their timeline.”
While detailed discussions haven’t commenced, Holland remains encouraged by the initial conversations. ”So we haven’t had any of those types of detailed discussions yet, but we certainly will, and I think we’re very encouraged by all the conversations I’ve had to date. And when the time comes, the time comes.”
McDavid’s Priority: winning
The Oilers have made consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup Final, though they fell short in both instances against the Florida Panthers. McDavid’s individual performance throughout these playoff runs has been exceptional.
