SUNRISE, Fla. — The Edmonton Oilers rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat⁣ the Florida Panthers 5-4 in overtime ‍Thursday, cutting Florida’s lead in the Stanley Cup Final ⁢to 3-1.

Edmonton’s comeback marked the first time a road team ⁢has overcome ‍a three-goal deficit to win ⁣a Cup Final game since 1919, when the Montreal Canadiens⁣ achieved the feat against the seattle Metropolitans.

“This is as good as this thing gets,”⁢ Panthers coach paul Maurice saeid. “This is Christmas. This is the ‍payoff.”

The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in ⁢the first period, but the Oilers responded with three‍ goals of⁣ their own in the second.Jake Walman appeared⁣ to seal the win for Florida ⁢with under seven⁢ minutes remaining, but sam‍ Reinhart tied the⁢ game with 20 seconds left, forcing overtime.

Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch acknowledged the game’s intensity. “Games like that… it’s exhausting,” he said. “It’s a⁢ roller⁢ coaster.”

leon Draisaitl scored the game-winning goal in ‍overtime, ⁣his fourth of the postseason, ⁤a new record.

“Fatigue kicks in at some point, but your adrenaline usually takes over,” Draisaitl said.

Matthew tkachuk scored two power-play goals for the Panthers and assisted on Reinhart’s tying ‍goal. “He’s back to form now,” Maurice said of Tkachuk.

Panthers⁤ goalie Sergei Bobrovsky and Oilers goalie Calvin Pickard have faced a⁢ barrage of shots throughout the series.”Both goalies ⁢have been unreal,” ⁢Tkachuk said.

During the first intermission, with the Panthers leading 3-0, veteran Corey Perry delivered an impassioned speech to the Oilers.Draisaitl noted Perry’s ⁤experience and leadership:⁢ “When he speaks up, you listen and you do what he says.”

the Oilers played with only five defensemen for much of the game after benching Troy Stecher.

Evander Kane’s undisciplined play led to him being dropped⁤ from⁣ Edmonton’s top six forwards during the game.

Thirty-two goals have been scored in⁣ the first four games of the series.

“Every board battle, everything can turn into something,” Maurice said. “So, there’s a tension, as both teams can score.”

What’s next

Game 5 is Saturday in⁣ Florida. The Oilers will look to⁢ continue their momentum, while the Panthers will aim to close out the series on home ice.
