A Perfect Partnership: Combining Urban Charm with Park-Like Amenities
The decision to relocate Oktoberfest was driven by a desire to find a venue that could capture the essence of its past while embracing future potential.”ankeny has a brand new amphitheater at the District at Prairie Trail that they just completed, and were very anxious and enthusiastic to welcome the festival,” shared [Insert Name of Organizer, e.g., Festival Director Sarah Toyne]. “And we were obviously looking for the best opportunity to host the event in the capacity that could accommodate what we’re looking for, which was in essence, a combination of what fourth Street offered in that urban feel that we loved and so many people embraced, as well as the feel of the park, which was ideal in many ways, too.”
The new amphitheater offers a unique advantage by already providing many of the essential elements that previously required significant investment. “A lot of the elements that we have to spend quite a bit of money on to bring to a venue like Water Works Park are already there as well,” [Toyne] explained. “And combine that with the fact that they were very anxious to partner with us and help showcase what they had built, just a few miles north of where we had been producing the event, it was really a no-brainer.”
Showcasing Regional Talent and Fostering Growth
The state-of-the-art amphitheater is expected to be a significant draw for the festival’s renowned polka bands, many of whom travel from across the region. This new venue provides an ideal platform to showcase their talents. Furthermore, the surrounding streets and existing infrastructure, including fencing and ample free parking, create a fertile ground for the festival to expand its offerings and reach a wider audience.
A Commitment to Community and Tradition
Producing an event as beloved as Oktoberfest is a significant undertaking, frequently enough involving substantial financial investment. “[Producing an event like Oktoberfest] is incredibly expensive,” [Toyne] admitted. “There are years the event has lost money, and I’ve continued to altruistically produce this event to provide entertainment options for Greater Des Moines and Central Iowa.” This dedication underscores the organizer’s commitment to the community and the preservation of this cherished cultural celebration.
Signature Oktoberfest Experiences Remain Intact
Festival-goers can rest assured that the heart and soul of Oktoberfest will remain unchanged. The 2025 celebration will continue to feature its signature programming, including the highly anticipated ceremonial golden keg tapping, the spirited Bier Maiden and Stein Holding contests, lively polka band performances, and the authentic German beer tents. These beloved traditions are the cornerstone of the Oktoberfest experience.
Embracing Change and Looking Ahead
While the decision to relocate has generated some discussion on social media, [Toyne] views this as a positive indicator of the festival’s impact. ”I have thick skin, and I think it indicates that we have created an event that has resonated with people,” she stated. “And I think that is a good sign.” the move to Ankeny’s District at Prairie Trail marks an exciting new chapter for Oktoberfest, promising an even more memorable and accessible experience for all who attend.
