The Touring Musician’s Golf Routine
For many professional athletes and entertainers, downtime on the road is precious. For members of the hit country band Old Dominion – Brad tursi and Trevor Rosen, specifically – that downtime often includes a round of golf. The duo, whose band has amassed nine no. 1 singles, recently discussed thier on-tour golf habits during an appearance on the “Subpar” podcast, coinciding with the release of their new album, Barbara, on Friday.
Tursi and Rosen aren’t casual golfers; they actively seek out courses wherever their tour takes them. Tursi described his initial approach: “In the beginning, I would search the venue on Google Maps or whatever, and then I would zoom out and see where all the courses were around. You’d see the tracks and just click on the nicest one and we would call up and be like, ‘Hey, we want too play.'”
The Art of the Cold Call (and Name Drop)
While Tursi handles the initial course scouting, Rosen admits to being the “cold caller.” He’s found a surprisingly high success rate, even when attempting to book tee times at exclusive, private clubs. rosen’s strategy hinges on gauging the age of the person answering the phone. “You can kinda tell how it’s gonna go depending on how you gauge the age of the person that picks up the phone,” he explained. “If it’s like,an old man or something,I’m like,OK,he’s not gonna know who we are.”
Though, simply stating their profession frequently enough works wonders. ”A lot of times, I just say, hey, we’re with a band called Old Dominion, we’re in town, and we just like to try to get out on a nice course if there’s any way we can get out there.” Remarkably, Rosen estimates a 90% success rate with this approach.
But what happens when a private club proves more resistant? Rosen has a clever workaround. “I’ll say, well, can I just leave my name and number and then if anybody wants to come to the show tonight, we can come golf and give you tickets?” he recounted. “And we’ll sit there on the bus and then it’ll be like two minutes later I’ll see [imitates a cell phone buzz]. ‘Hey, there’s some people down here that really like you guys, so yeah, sure, come on out.'”
Bucket List Courses and Beyond
Old Dominion’s golf adventures haven’t been limited to opportunistic rounds. The band members have had the chance to play some of the most prestigious courses in the world, including Pebble Beach Golf Links,Spyglass Hill Golf Course, the famously exclusive Cypress Point Club, and Pronghorn Golf Club.
The full “Subpar” episode also features stories about encounters with golfing legends like Jim Nantz, John Daly, and Tim mcgraw, offering a glimpse into the intersection of country music and the world of golf.
