Oliver Holmes’ Rugby Career cut Short by Injury
Oliver Holmes, the Hull FC back-rower, has announced his retirement from rugby league at age 32 due to a knee injury. The setback concludes a career that included stints with Castleford Tigers, Warrington, and Leigh.
Holmes signed a two-year deal with Hull FC for the 2025 season. His only appearance for the club was in February during a Challenge Cup victory against York Acorn.
The veteran player earned one cap for England in 2018 and celebrated a Challenge Cup win with Leigh in 2023. His career, however, has been curtailed by persistent physical issues.
“Calling it a day has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve made throughout my career. The head still wanted to go, but unfortunately the body was saying no,” Holmes told the club website.
Holmes further explained the difficult decision, citing unsuccessful attempts to recover. “I gave myself every chance to get back playing again, but unfortunately that just didn’t happen and that’s the way it is in sport sometimes.”
Despite undergoing surgery and various treatments, holmes acknowledged that his body could no longer meet the demands of the sport. “We’ve tried different injections and I’ve been for surgery, but things just haven’t worked out how I wanted them to on the medical side of things and now’s the time to call it a day sadly,” he said.
What’s next
Hull FC will need to adjust their lineup following Holmes’ unexpected retirement, potentially seeking a replacement to bolster their back-row options as they continue through the 2025 season.
