Olivia Rodrigo made her live debut of the new single “Drop Dead” at the 2026 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 12, performing the track alongside guest collaborator Addison Rae during her headlining set on the festival’s second weekend.

The performance took place on the Coachella main stage shortly after 9:30 p.m. Local time, marking the first time Rodrigo played the song for a live audience. “Drop Dead” is the lead single from her upcoming third studio album, which Rodrigo confirmed is slated for release later in 2026 through Geffen Records.

Rodrigo introduced the track by saying she had been working on new music that explored “the space between letting go and holding on,” before launching into the synth-driven chorus of “Drop Dead.” The song features a pulsing electronic beat layered with Rodrigo’s signature vocal harmonies, drawing comparisons to her earlier work on Sour while incorporating more pronounced dance-pop influences.

Addison Rae joined Rodrigo on stage for the second verse and bridge, contributing backing vocals and choreographed movements that complemented the song’s rhythmic build. Rae, who has been developing her own music career since 2023, has previously collaborated with Rodrigo on social media content but had not performed with her live prior to Coachella.

The collaboration was not announced in advance, though both artists had been spotted together at the festival earlier in the day. Rodrigo’s set also included performances of fan favorites such as “good 4 u,” “deja vu,” and “vampire,” alongside deeper cuts from her second album Guts, including “lacy” and “the grudge.”

Following the performance, Rodrigo spoke briefly with reporters backstage about the song’s origins. She explained that “Drop Dead” began as a piano ballad during writing sessions in early 2025 but evolved into its current form after experimenting with tempo and production techniques alongside her longtime collaborators Dan Nigro and Alexander 23.

“I wanted it to feel like a release,” Rodrigo said. “Not just lyrically, but sonically — something that builds and then drops into this moment where you can just move.” She added that the lyrics reflect a personal turning point, though she declined to elaborate further on specific inspirations.

The live debut of “Drop Dead” was met with strong audience response, according to attendees and festival staff. Video clips of the performance began circulating online shortly after the set ended, with particular attention drawn to the song’s transition from a subdued verse into its explosive chorus.

Critics noted the strategic timing of the release. Variety highlighted the performance as a key moment in Rodrigo’s artistic evolution, observing that the song signals a deliberate shift toward more experimental pop textures while maintaining the emotional directness that characterized her breakout success.

The New York Times described “Drop Dead” as a “heavenly fakeout” in its initial review, pointing to the contrast between the song’s introspective opening and its climactic, dance-oriented drop. The review praised Rodrigo’s vocal control and the track’s production cohesion, calling it “a bold step forward that still feels unmistakably hers.”

Vogue covered Rodrigo’s fashion choice for the performance, noting she wore a custom baby-doll silhouette dress in pale pink with delicate lace detailing, designed by a Los Angeles-based stylist team working with the singer. The outlet framed the look as part of a broader spring 2026 trend toward nostalgic yet modern femininity in celebrity styling.

Artnet News later released the official music video for “Drop Dead,” which premiered on Rodrigo’s YouTube channel on April 15. The video, directed by frequent collaborator Petra Collins, features the singer navigating a surreal, pastel-toned version of the Palace of Versailles, blending historical opulence with contemporary dance sequences.

In a separate interview with Rolling Stone, Rodrigo addressed speculation about whether she had played “Drop Dead” for Robert Smith of The Cure, whom she has cited as an influence. She clarified that while she had shared other unreleased music with Smith during a brief conversation at a London event in March, she had not played him the new single.

Rodrigo’s team has not announced an official release date for “Drop Dead” on streaming platforms, though industry observers expect it to become available within weeks of the Coachella performance, following the standard rollout pattern for festival debuts. Her upcoming album remains untitled, with Rodrigo stating in interviews that she is still finalizing track listings and considering visual concepts for the project.

As of April 2026, Rodrigo continues to be one of the most-streamed artists globally, with her first two albums accumulating over 20 billion combined streams across platforms. Her return to Coachella — where she first performed in 2022 as a rising breakout act — marks a significant moment in her trajectory from teen pop sensation to established voice in contemporary music.
