Olivia Rodrigo Glastonbury: Surprise Guest wows fans
The singer was praised for her decision to bring a music legend onto the stage
As Olivia Rodrigo headlined Glastonbury Festival for the first time, fans were in shock when her surprise guest was Robert Smith from The Cure.
The 22-year-old first made her festival debut in 2022 when she performed on the Pyramid stage. On Sunday (29th June), the singer returned to the very same stage but as a headliner for the closing night.
This makes her the second youngest solo artist to headline Glastonbury, after Billie Eilish.
Olivia certainly made an impact from the beginning of her set, balancing on a tightrope before belting out her first song. After performing some of her biggest hits including Vampire, Olivia announced that she had a special guest.
Fans of the star may recall that in 2022, Olivia surprised crowds by bringing Lily Allen to the stage to perform the track F You, dedicating it to the US Supreme Court justices who had ended the constitutional right to abortion in America just a day earlier.
Ahead of her performance, she took to her Instagram and wrote: “Headlining glasto has been one of my biggest dreams for so long. Truly can’t believe this! So grateful and sooo excited. Hope to see you there.”
On Sunday, it was Robert Smith from The Cure who she invited to join her on the stage, announcing him as a Glastonbury “legend”. They performed Friday, I’m In Love together.
The Cure have headlined the festival multiple times, in 1986, 1990, 1995 and 2019.
Festival fans were quick to praise the star for her decision and flocked to social media to celebrate the performance.
On X (formerly known as Twitter), @JustDxm wrote: “Olivia Rodrigo bringing out Robert Smith for a couple songs as well. What a show.”
@Walker_this_way added: “Olivia Rodrigo duetting with Robert Smith before shouting out Colin the Caterpillar may be the most British think an American has ever done”
Another viewer @KatieCurtis penned: “Olivia Rodrigo and Robert Smith is the wildest combination I’ve ever seen and it was genius”
