Pop star Olivia Rodrigo has revealed that her upcoming third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, is deeply personal, drawing inspiration from her first “big girl relationship” and the complex emotions that accompanied it. The album, set for release on June 12 via Geffen Records, explores themes of jealousy, longing, and the challenges of writing about love in a positive light, Rodrigo shared in a recent interview.
Album Inspired by Personal Relationship
In an interview with Audacy Check In, posted on April 23, Rodrigo described the creative process behind the album as a departure from her previous works, Sour (2021) and Guts (2023), both of which topped the Billboard 200 chart. While her earlier albums focused heavily on heartbreak, Rodrigo said this project presented a new challenge: writing about romantic love in a way that felt authentic, and nuanced.
“I think the challenge for me was to write songs about romantic love positively,”
Rodrigo said.
“I think when I set out to write this album, I was really in love—sort of my first ‘big girl’ relationship,” she continued, though she did not name her partner. “Writing a song about happiness is a lot harder than writing a song about heartbreak. It was sort of challenging myself to make a love song and also talk about some of the more negative feelings that go along with being in romantic relationships, like longing and yearning and jealousy and missing your partner when they’re away.”
Musical Direction and Influences
The album’s themes align with Rodrigo’s earlier comments to British Vogue in March, where she noted that her favorite love songs often carry a “tinge of fear or yearning.” She has cited a range of musical influences for the project, including The Cure, New Order, Joy Division, The White Stripes, and Bikini Kill. In 2023, Rodrigo told NME that her parents’ love of bands like The Cure and Depeche Mode had shaped her own musical tastes, a sentiment she reiterated in her approach to this album.

“I love pop-punk music; I love grunge music; I love country music and folk music,” she said in 2021. “I think, honestly, you can see little influences of all of those genres in my album [Sour].”
Album Rollout and Early Reactions
Rodrigo first teased the album in March, when fans discovered cryptic pink promotional materials in Los Angeles and London. She officially announced You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love shortly after, describing it as “experimental” and filled with “sad love songs.” The lead single, “Drop Dead,” was released earlier this month and debuted live during Addison Rae’s set at Coachella. Rodrigo later performed the song at a surprise appearance at a New York City open mic event.
On April 25, Rodrigo held an intimate, invite-only show at Los Angeles’ The Echo, where she previewed what appears to be the album’s next single, featuring Weyes Blood. The performance, which was phone-free, offered fans an early glimpse into the album’s sound. Rodrigo has also been spotted in Los Angeles with Geese frontman Cameron Winter, fueling speculation about a potential collaboration on the record.
Looking Ahead
Rodrigo’s previous albums have cemented her status as one of pop’s most compelling voices, with Guts earning widespread critical acclaim and a headline performance at Glastonbury 2025, where she was joined onstage by The Cure’s Robert Smith. With You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, she continues to push creative boundaries, blending personal storytelling with experimental sounds.
The album’s release on June 12 will mark another milestone in Rodrigo’s evolving artistic journey, offering fans a deeper look into the emotions that have shaped her most recent work.
