The retailer noted that the release carried broader cultural significance beyond merchandise sales. Store management highlighted the artist’s efforts to build a stage for women in music and raise funds dedicated to women and girls. Analog Music Shop teased that the track would receive a wider public release on Aug. 24.
Album Context and Tracklist History
Initially put to tape during production work for Rodrigo’s third LP, You Look Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, "Serena Joy" first emerged during those sessions, which famously opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in June. Despite making the recording sessions, the track did not make the final album sequence.

Rodrigo explained the omission in an interview with Etalk, noting that the album functioned as a strict chronicle of a relationship spanning a beginning, middle, and end.
I actually really love [‘Serena Joy’]. It didn’t fit on the album, Rodrigo told Etalk. The record was very much a chronicle of a relationship — beginning, middle and end. But I hope that it’ll be a part of something else down the line.

While Rodrigo did not issue a formal personal statement regarding the CD single release at press time, the physical drop aligns with her recent promotional rollouts. Rodrigo’s single "Drop Dead" climbed to No. 1 on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart, and the singer performed an intimate underplay show at Warsaw in Brooklyn, New York.
Daisy Chain Fields Festival Lineup
The physical single release directly precedes Rodrigo’s headlining slot at the Daisy Chain Fields festival on Aug. 29. The event features an all-women lineup curated to highlight prominent artists across alternative and pop genres.

The festival schedule features non-overlapping set times across the grounds. Confirmed performers include Chappell Roan, Garbage, Doechii, The Breeders, Mitski, Bikini Kill, and KATSEYE, alongside special guest appearances by Karen O, Sarah McLachlan, and Stevie Nicks.
