Olivia Wilde Returns With The Invite

Olivia Wilde explores the complex friction of long-term relationships, domestic routine, and unexpressed desires in her third directorial feature, La invitación (The Invite), which was released on July 23, 2026, according to coverage by El Espectador.

The film serves as an intimate cinematic essay examining the vicisitudes of contemporary couple life. According to El Espectador, the narrative begins simply when neighbors receive an invitation for dinner at an apartment, which quickly triggers an evening of unexpected turns, bringing long-repressed emotions and unexamined desires to the surface.

Adapting Stage Roots to Cinema

The production is based on the play Los vecinos de arriba by Cesc Gay, which previously inspired Gay’s own 2020 film adaptation Sentimental, as reported by El Espectador. Wilde moves the drama fluidly between theatrical staging and cinematic language.

El Espectador notes that the screenplay was written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack. The writers approach marriage and desire with a cultural lens that quietly challenges audiences to evaluate their own relational dynamics and the fragility of socially constructed affection pacts.

Exploring Intimacy and Isolation

According to Milenio, Wilde stated that the project was never primarily about sex or infidelity. Instead, the director and star wanted to examine why couples in long-term, stable relationships can stop truly seeing one another, confusing physical proximity with emotional fusion.

I think this film talks more about relationships than about sex, Wilde told Milenio. Sex forms part of relationships in a very important way, but it’s usually underestimated as a form of nonverbal communication, of trust, and of exploration.

The film features Wilde as Angela alongside Seth Rogen as Joe. In the opening scenes, Joe returns home from demanding work, illustrating a flat, routine existence, while Angela displays detachment and is drawn to outside interests. El Espectador highlights how the visual language uses tight framing and enclosed spaces to emphasize interpersonal discomfort and solitary domestic coexistence.

Cast Dynamics and Desired Provocations

Wilde explained to Milenio that casting Rogen as Joe helped establish the film’s tone, pointing to Rogen’s dramatic range. The cast also includes Penélope Cruz as Pina and Edward Norton as Hawk. According to El Espectador, the introduction of Cruz and Norton’s characters—and a subsequent proposition for a partner swap—acts as a catalyst that forces the main characters to confront long-avoided realities.

Milenio notes that Wilde sought to use comedy as a tool to open painful conversations, hoping viewers would recognize themselves and find release through laughter while questioning their own life choices and personal responsibilities regarding happiness.
