Geelong forward Ollie Henry believes the club’s remarkable consistency stems from a strong team culture and unwavering work ethic.
It has been a golden era for Geelong, with the Cats remaining a perennial contender for nearly two decades. After a rare miss in 2023, they bounced back in 2024, falling just short of the Grand Final.Henry, in his second season at the club, played a crucial role in the resurgence, kicking 37 goals, including a stunning four-goal haul in the Preliminary Final against Brisbane.Speaking on RSN’s Summer Breakfast,Henry highlighted the resilience of the playing group as a key factor in their sustained success.
“It is a hard one to put your finger on to be honest,” Henry said. “I think it is a really good group of people first of all. Missing out on Finals [2023], which is a rare occasion for the club, but the reaction that our teammates and coaches had was notable enough to put us in good stead early last year.”
He emphasized the strong mentality within the team and the positive environment fostered by the club.
“The group really goes to work, it is a very good mentality here and it is a nice environment that everyone has bought in to,” Henry added.
Looking ahead to 2025, Henry expressed excitement about the upcoming season, which includes several prime-time matches and 10 games at GMHBA Stadium.
The Cats have also bolstered their ranks with the additions of Bailey Smith and Jack Martin.Henry spoke about the early impact of the new recruits.
“Jack is a talented player, so I am sure he will be able to play a variety of roles for us,” Henry said. “I am sure Jack will find his spot to show his talents across the ground, I would be happy having him up forward though as he is quite a good player.”
He praised Smith’s work ethic and professionalism, noting his positive influence on the team.
“Bailey has had quite a good influence early on for us, he is the hardest worker that you will see. He is very professional when he is in at the club, he gets work done and he brings a lot of boys along with him,” Henry said.
“It has been a really impressive start by Bailey, I am really keen to see how he can continue to influence others to better themselves.”
