Following a disappointing overtime loss to Dubai Basketball Club on February 3, 2026, Olympiacos head coach Giorgos Bartzokas was involved in a heated exchange with a fan at the Coca-Cola Arena. The incident occurred as Bartzokas was leaving the court after the Tuesday game, which ended with a score of 98-108 in favor of Dubai.

According to reports, the altercation stemmed from verbal abuse directed at the 60-year-old coach. Bartzokas reportedly addressed the situation and moved towards the stands, where the exchange escalated. Witnesses state that the coach, visibly frustrated, climbed into the stands to confront the fan. Intervention from others was required to prevent the situation from becoming more volatile.

The loss to Dubai marked the end of a five-game winning streak for Olympiacos, bringing their EuroLeague season record to 16-9. The team is currently battling for a playoff berth and home-court advantage in the best-of-five series that determines qualification for the Final Four, which will be held in Telekom Center Athens.

The incident with the fan is not the only recent controversy surrounding Bartzokas. Panathinaikos, another EuroLeague team, has announced its intention to pursue legal action against the Olympiacos coach. This action follows allegations that Bartzokas insulted Panathinaikos and its fans during the altercation with the supporter in Dubai. Panathinaikos released a statement condemning both the incident and Bartzokas’s behavior, expressing surprise at the lack of response from Olympiacos.

Further complicating matters, reports indicate a separate incident occurred during a previous game in Belgrade. Following a game against Partizan, Bartzokas allegedly had an altercation with an assistant coach from Zeljko Obradovic’s team after the final whistle. This was followed by skirmishes with Partizan player Tyrique Jones and another fan who entered the court. Bartzokas subsequently voiced concerns about the behavior of Serbian officials and fans following the game.

Despite the recent setbacks and controversies, Olympiacos is preparing for its next EuroLeague matchup against Virtus Bologna on Friday. The team continues to deal with a significant number of injuries, with Keenan Evans (left Achilles tendon), Moustapha Fall (left knee), Monte Morris (left knee), Frank Ntilikina (ankle), and Kostas Papanikolaou (back) all currently unavailable. Omiros Netzipoglou was a healthy scratch for the game against Dubai.

In a post-game press conference following the loss to Dubai, Bartzokas also addressed the team’s struggles with free throws and the impact of the ongoing injury situation. He also confirmed that Thomas Walkup is expected to return for the playoffs, providing a potential boost to the team’s roster as they push for a championship run.

The series of incidents involving Bartzokas raises questions about the increasing tensions within the EuroLeague and the challenges faced by coaches and players dealing with passionate – and sometimes aggressive – fans. The league will likely be under pressure to address these issues and ensure the safety and respect of all involved.

The situation with Panathinaikos and the potential legal ramifications for Bartzokas add another layer of complexity. The club’s decision to pursue legal action underscores the seriousness with which they view the coach’s alleged comments and the need to protect their reputation and fanbase.

As Olympiacos prepares for its upcoming games, the team will need to navigate these challenges both on and off the court. The return of key players like Thomas Walkup will be crucial, but maintaining focus and composure in the face of adversity will be equally important.
