Sean O’Malley Aims to Exploit Merab Dvalishvili’s ‍Weakness in UFC 316 Rematch

 ‌ Updated ‌June 03, 2025

Sean O’Malley is preparing to challenge Merab Dvalishvili for the title at UFC 316 in Newark, New Jersey. This highly anticipated rematch follows Dvalishvili’s victory over O’Malley at UFC 306 last September, where he secured ‌a unanimous ‍decision win.

Despite Dvalishvili’s dominant performance in ⁤their first encounter, former UFC title challenger Dan Hardy believes O’Malley may have identified a crucial ‌weakness. Hardy‌ suggests‍ that O’Malley should⁣ focus on⁤ damaging Dvalishvili’s midsection.

Hardy noted that in⁣ the⁢ fifth round of their previous fight, a front⁣ kick to the body visibly hurt Dvalishvili. “That last round went the way that it did with the ⁤front kick to the midsection and Merab being hurt⁤ and looking up at the clock, I mean, that was a dead giveaway,” Hardy said. He added that targeting the body could sap‍ Dvalishvili’s renowned cardio, ‍a key component of his pressure-heavy wrestling style.

“The obvious⁤ target for Merab is his midsection… If‌ he can do ⁤damage, he can sap the gas tank of Merab.”

While Dvalishvili’s wrestling and overall game plan pose a meaningful challenge, Hardy believes O’Malley⁤ possesses the skills to secure a ⁣win. ‍He predicts O’Malley might “steal ⁢this one ‍with something ‍clean as Merab is overextending himself,” potentially leading to a rubber⁤ match.

What’s next

The UFC 316 rematch between Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili promises high stakes. ‌O’Malley’s focus on body shots could be the key to⁢ victory, potentially neutralizing Dvalishvili’s cardio and wrestling prowess.
