Many Pregnant Women Lack Sufficient Omega-3 Intake, Study Shows

Despite widespread recommendations, a new nationwide study indicates that a meaningful number of pregnant women are not consuming enough omega-3 fatty acids, crucial for both their health and the development of their children. The research highlights a gap between recommended dietary guidelines and actual intake among pregnant individuals.
The study, published Feb. 27 in Public Health Nutrition, was conducted by researchers at the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute. it examined data from over 10,000 pregnant women across the U.S. participating in the Environmental influences on child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program. The findings arrive as both the World Health organization and U.S. National Academies prepare to release reports on the benefits and risks of fish consumption during pregnancy.
The research revealed that approximately 25% of participants reported infrequent fish consumption (less than once a month), and only 16% used omega-3 supplements. surprisingly, supplement use was less prevalent among those who ate little fish, compounding their risk of omega-3 deficiency. The study also found that older, wealthier, and more educated women tended to consume more fish. Supplement use was highest among non-Hispanic White or Asian women with higher incomes and education levels.
Interestingly, fish consumption was higher among pregnant women with racial or ethnic identities other than non-Hispanic White and among those who used tobacco or nicotine products.Supplement use was less common among those at higher risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes due to tobacco or nicotine use or a higher body mass index (BMI).
“Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients for supporting positive health outcomes. Getting enough of these nutrients during pregnancy is vital for preventing preterm birth and promoting optimal child health and neurodevelopment,” said Emily Oken, Harvard Medical School professor and lead author of the study.
Oken added that the benefits of consuming low-mercury fish or omega-3 supplements outweigh potential risks. She emphasized the need for updated public health advice and clinical resources to encourage low-mercury fish consumption and omega-3 supplement intake during pregnancy.
