la Costa Resort & Spa: A Golfing Legacy and Resort destination
A History Rooted in Championship golf
For nearly three decades, la Costa Resort & Spa hosted a who’s who of golf champions. Gary Player was the first winner at the inaugural Tournament of Champions in 1969, followed by legends like Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, and Lee Trevino.
Built in 1965 on the site of a former equestrian ranch north of San Diego,Omni La Costa Resort & Spa quickly became a premier destination for both professional and recreational golfers. The Tournament of Champions called La Costa home for 30 years, creating a legacy of compelling competition.
Even after the Tournament of Champions moved to Kapalua in 1999, La Costa remained a meaningful venue for televised golf, hosting the WGC-Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship. Jeff Maggert won the first Match Play event, and Tiger Woods secured three victories there, including a notable defeat in the finals against Darren Clarke.
Beyond the Tournament: A Dual Identity
While championship golf is integral to La Costa’s identity, the resort has always prioritized the recreational experience. Designed as a destination for family vacations, romantic getaways, and all types of escapes, La Costa balances its competitive spirit with a welcoming atmosphere for all guests.
Recent multi-million dollar investments have further enhanced this dual identity, focusing on both golf course improvements and resort amenities.
