Remembering Zohair El-Babli: A Tribute to an Artistic Legacy

Today marks the anniversary of the death of artist Zohair El-Babli, who passed away on November 21, 2021. Known as “Soska” by her fans, she left an enduring mark on Egyptian culture through her roles in plays, films, and series.

Early Life and Career

Born in Faraskur Center in Damietta Governorate, Zohair displayed talent at a young age. She attended both the Drama Institute and the Music Institute, which presented challenges due to family expectations. She began her career with numerous films, including “The Life of a Woman,” “The Unknown Woman,” and “A Day in My Life.”

Rise to Fame

Zohair’s breakthrough came through collaborations with actor Fouad Al Mohandis. Notable films from this period include “The Ambassador’s Side” and “The Most Dangerous Man in the World.” These projects introduced her to the broader Egyptian audience.

Theater Success

Zohair became a leading figure in theater, especially after taking on the role of “Abla Ifat” in the play “School of Rioters.” Initially, other actresses were considered for the role, but Zohair’s performance was memorable. Her theatrical acclaim continued with productions like “Entering the Official Dress” and “Raiya and Sakina.”

Notable Works and Friendship

Zohair starred in “Baqija and Jaghlool,” a beloved comedy series from the mid-eighties that resonated deeply with viewers. The character Baqija became iconic, leading to her nickname among fans. She also maintained a strong friendship with actress Esad Younes, appearing with her in various projects.

Retirement from Acting

In a surprising turn, Zohair announced her retirement shortly before filming the second season of “Atiya the Terrorist.” She felt inspired by her daughter’s dedication to religious practices and sought to align her own life choices accordingly.

Zohair El-Babli passed away at the age of 84 after a diabetic coma. Her dedication to her craft and her memorable roles continue to inspire both fans and aspiring artists. Her contributions to Egyptian art and culture will be cherished for generations.
