A gunman opened fire on tourists at the historic Teotihuacán pyramids outside Mexico City on Monday, killing one Canadian and leaving at least 13 people injured, authorities confirmed.

The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Julio Cesar Jasso of Mexico, stood atop one of the pyramids and fired on visitors before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to state officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Security personnel recovered a gun, a knife and ammunition at the scene, and the State of Mexico government confirmed Jasso acted alone in the attack.

Local authorities said seven people were wounded by gunshots, while the remaining injuries occurred when individuals fell or were struck during the chaos, including some who were climbing the pyramids at the time.

Those taken to hospitals for treatment included six Americans, three Colombians, one Russian, two Brazilians, and the Canadian who was killed. The youngest injured person was six years old; the oldest was 61.

The Teotihuacán pyramids, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are located north of Mexico’s capital and were constructed by three different ancient civilizations. The site is one of Mexico’s most important tourist destinations.
