The incident unfolded around 1:20 p.m. Local time near the food court, where two groups of people engaged in a targeted shooting, police said. Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse stated that the shooting did not appear to be a random act of violence but rather a confrontation between two groups that escalated into gunfire.
Ten people suffered various levels of injuries and were transported from the scene, with some arriving by private vehicle, officials confirmed. One person has died, as reported by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office.
Police said there were no immediate arrests, as suspects remained at large following the shooting. Authorities secured the scene and evacuated all shoppers from the mall. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry said he was aware of the attack and expressed gratitude for the swift response by law enforcement officials.
