Judge Denounces “One-Punch Attack”
Imposing sentence, Judge Martin Nolan described the assault as a “one-punch attack” adn noted that the defendant had “moved towards the trouble.” The judge acknowledged mitigating factors before handing down the four-year sentence, with the final 18 months suspended on strict conditions.
Escalation of Violence
Garda Richard Pender informed David Perry BL, prosecuting, that Mr. Hudacek had been in the bar with four othre Slovakian men. While staff reported the group had been singing loudly and asked to quieten down, they had not otherwise caused any disturbance.
Manson was present in the bar with a group of men who appeared agitated by mr. Hudacek’s party. The situation escalated when one man from Manson’s group left to make a phone call and returned with four additional men. These individuals then reportedly stared continuously at Mr. Hudacek’s group.
Weapons Sought in Bar
As Mr. Hudacek and his friends departed the bar, they were followed by the other group. Crucially, before leaving the premises, one man armed himself with a steak knife from a cutlery basket. Another individual attempted to take a knife from the kitchen but was prevented by staff, and a subsequent attempt to take a knife from the cutlery basket was also thwarted.
Devastating Consequences for Victim
The court heard that one man from the opposing group approached the Slovakian men, asking, “What is your problem?” before throwing a punch. Mr. Hudacek began to walk towards the group when manson delivered a punch to his face, knocking him to the ground. Mr.Hudacek struck his head on the pavement and was rendered unconscious.
Garda Pender described a subsequent “brawl” that ensued for approximately 90 seconds, during which all men from Mr. Hudacek’s group were punched and kicked.Manson then left the scene but later returned to the bar, passing the unconscious Mr. Hudacek twice.
CCTV footage of the assault was presented to the court. mr. Perry stated that Mr. Hudacek underwent five hours of brain surgery and spent five weeks in a medically induced coma. Garda Pender confirmed that it is indeed highly probable Mr. Hudacek, who was repatriated to Slovakia by air ambulance, will never be able to work again.

The court was informed that Manson has 12 previous convictions from Northern Ireland, including offences from October 2009 related to firearms and conspiracy to rob.Manson offered €20,000 in court as a token of remorse, which the judge directed be paid within one month.
