NASA’s Curiosity rover has detected the largest organic molecules found to date on Mars, marking a significant development in the search for evidence of ancient life on the red planet.

The discovery includes compounds such as decane, undecane, and dodecane, which are long-chain hydrocarbons that may be fragments of fatty acids. These molecules were identified in a powdered sample drilled from a rock target named Cumberland in Gale Crater, analyzed using the rover’s Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument.

The rock sample is estimated to be 3.7 billion years old, placing the organic material in a period when Mars may have had conditions more favorable to life. Scientists note that while such molecules can be associated with biological processes on Earth, they can also form through non-biological means, such as interactions between water and minerals in hydrothermal systems.
