Apple has released an emergency iOS update to patch a security vulnerability that allowed law enforcement to recover deleted text messages from the Signal messaging app.
The iOS 26.4.2 update, released on April 23, 2026, addresses a flaw in the device’s notifications service that could cause messages marked for deletion to be unexpectedly retained on the device. This vulnerability was exploited in a federal trial where the FBI retrieved deleted Signal messages from a user’s iPhone.
According to Apple’s release notes, the update resolves the issue described as: “Notifications marked for deletion could be unexpectedly retained on the device.” The flaw impacted the core notifications system, potentially affecting not only Signal but other messaging apps that rely on timely deletion of notifications.
Signal users often rely on the app’s disappearing messages feature, which automatically deletes texts after a set time. However, this protection was undermined by the underlying iOS flaw, which preserved deleted notifications in the device’s storage even after the app had removed them.
The ZDNET report noted that while the vulnerability does not impact most users, Apple deemed it urgent enough to issue an out-of-band update. The patch aims to close the loophole that could allow forensic tools or legal processes to access supposedly erased data through the notification system.
This update follows a broader trend of increasing tension between device privacy features and law enforcement access to encrypted communications. Apple has historically positioned iOS as a leader in user privacy, but this incident highlights how system-level vulnerabilities can compromise app-specific security measures.
Users are advised to install iOS 26.4.2 immediately through the Settings app under General > Software Update. The update is available for all compatible iPhone and iPad models running iOS 26.
