The elder Johansson also suited up for the Swedes at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

In his second full NHL season, Albert Johansson has committed to represent Sweden at the upcoming IIHF World Championship.

Johansson, a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, confirmed his participation in the tournament, which will be held in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic, from May 9 to May 25, 2026.

This marks Johansson’s first appearance for the Swedish national team at the senior level since his Olympic and World Cup appearances in the mid-1990s.

The Detroit Red Wings organization released a statement supporting Johansson’s decision, noting his commitment to both club and country.

Johansson has recorded 2 goals and 12 assists in 58 games for the Red Wings during the 2025-26 NHL season, averaging 19:30 of ice time per game.

His addition strengthens Sweden’s defensive corps ahead of a tournament that includes traditional powers such as Canada, Finland, and the United States.

Sweden is grouped in the preliminary round with Slovakia, Latvia, and Kazakhstan, with the top four teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals.

The IIHF World Championship serves as a key evaluation point for players ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Johansson’s experience at the international level, though dated, provides veteran presence to a Swedish squad blending youth and experience.

The Red Wings, currently positioned in the Atlantic Division standings, will monitor Johansson’s workload and condition upon his return from international duty.

No injury or health concerns have been reported regarding Johansson ahead of his departure for the World Championship.

Further updates on Johansson’s performance and availability will be provided by the Detroit Red Wings and IIHF as the tournament approaches.
